Birchen Edge is in the Derbyshire Peak District not far from the town of Baslow and is popular with both climbers and walkers.

Standing on top of the gritstone cliff is a monument to Admiral Lord Nelson erected in 1810, some five years after Nelsons death at Trafalgar. The are three large gritstone outcrops not far from the monument and these are named after three of Nelsons ships from the Battle of Trafalgar and are Victory, Defiance and Royal Sovereign. Each rock has its name carved in to its surface although the Royal Sovereign is spelt "Royal Soverin".
